This investment was made when British International Investment was named CDC Group.
In April 2014, CDC made a $25 million loan to SBM. The seven-year credit facility is intended to support SBM’s efforts to increase lending to local businesses, particularly those with a need for foreign exchange.
Malawi has periodically faced shortages of long-term foreign currency funding and our loan will help SBM to provide longer term funds to corporate customers in need of FX for expansion capital and growth.
The loan will help SBM to manage its foreign exchange risk and run a more stable loan book.
This, in turn, will support the country's export-oriented businesses and drive economic development and job growth
Environmental and social aspects
We worked with Standard Bank Malawi to ensure that international environmental and social standards were met in the delivery of each of the loans provided via the facility
Since 2012, we’ve only invested in Africa and South Asia. Investments outside these regions are from our pre-2012 portfolio.
- Africa, East Africa
We have seven priority sectors. However, we continue to invest outside these sectors, largely in the most challenging regions, as new investment supporting any sector helps to underpin the private sector, and create jobs and livelihoods for people.
