H.E. Wamkele Mene

Secretary-General, African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat

H.E. Wamkele Mene has served as Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat for nearly three years.

Prior to being elected, he served as Chief Director of Africa Economic Relations at the Department of Trade & Industry of South Africa. In this role, he was South Africa’s chief trade negotiator in the AfCFTA and Tripartite FTA negotiations. He has also worked as Director for International Trade Law & Investment Law at the Department of Trade & Industry.

He has written and lectured internationally on international trade law, international investment law and international business law. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Rhodes University in South Africa, a Master’s degree in International Studies & Diplomacy from the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) in London, and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Banking Law & Financial Regulation from the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE).
