Strive Masiyiwa on connecting broadband from Cape Town to Cairo

Digital infrastructure is still a major problem for Africa’s governments, people and its businesses. Improving access to affordable and quality internet is central to Africa’s development and economic growth, and a key part of UN Sustainable Development Goal 9.

In December 2018 we announced our US$180 million equity investment in Liquid Telecom, the largest independent fibre and cloud provider in Africa. Our investment seeks to support Liquid Telecom in expanding infrastructure that improves access, quality and affordability of internet access for millions of people and businesses across Africa. Our capital helped to accelerate expansion of Liquid Telecom’s Cape-to-Cairo route, which connected Cape Town to Cairo by fibre network for the first time.

In this video, Strive Masiyiwa, Founder and Executive Chairman of Liquid Telecom’s parent company Econet Group, shares where his vision for connecting the Cape-to-Cairo route came from.
