What?
| Impact |
|---|
The IIDEA Fund aims to intentionally direct capital to women owned and led (WOL) businesses with the dual objective of (a) addressing the lack of capital flowing to WOL businesses that have been financially underserved due to higher perceived risk, and; (b) demonstrating the viability of GLI as a sound investment strategy, ultimately catalysing the broader market for GLI. |
|
|
How?
| How? |
|---|
|
Direct: The IIDEA Fund will direct 60% of its portfolio (9 out of 15 companies) with the intent of creating a demonstration effect on the market that a gender-lens focused portfolio construction strategy can deliver market returns, thereby lowering perceived risk associated with genders-lens investing strategy. Indirect: With backing from an established fund manager, we expect IIDEA to catalyse India's VC market through the demonstration pathway. Beyond direct investments, these WOL businesses create significant ripple effects: generating quality employment, expanding leadership opportunities for women, and improving income opportunities and livelihoods for underserved women. |
Who?
| Stakeholder | Geography | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Women owned and led businesses |
India |
100% of IIDEA's portfolio will be 2X-aligned (with 50% meeting two or more 2X Criteria at the end of the fund life) and will primarily invest in technology enabled companies including themes around digitization, automation, artificial intelligence and green jobs thus ensuring women's participation and contribution to future industries. Thematically, 15%+ of the Fund will be invested in CF eligible companies, while the Fund is expected to have 15-30% low -income reach. 60% of the Fund portfolio (9 out of 15 companies) will be WOL businesses |
| Employees of fund investees |
India |
19% of Fund II and IV portfolio companies meet the 2X Employment threshold. We expect this proportion to be maintained. However, the no. of jobs created would be low, given IIDEA’s focus on pre-seed/seed businesses. |
How much?
| Scale | Depth/Duration |
|---|---|
|
9 out of 15 companies will be women-owned or led. Considering the early-staged focus, the scale of employment generation is expected to be low. Exact number is difficult to assess at ex-ante. |
It will be difficult to assess the depth of impact of the generalist portfolio strategy. At an ecosystem level, we expect IIDEA to create a demonstration effect, lowering the perceived risk associated with pursuing a GLI Fund strategy, therefore mobilizing future Fund Managers to also raise GLI Funds. |
Contribution/additionality
| Contribution/additionality |
|---|
|
High. IIDEA Fund I will be a BII managed account administered by 3one4 Capital and will be a dedicated vehicle investing in India-based early-stage companies scaling tech and tech-enabled businesses with a mandate around inclusion (primarily gender lens investing) and climate. BII has co-created an impact sleeve with 3one4 focused on gender-lens investing. No other investors have shown interest in investing in this Fund at this stage. |
Risk
Execution RiskMedium. Considering the relatively smaller investable universe of women-owned and led (WOL) businesses reduced further by eliminating sectors possessing reputation risk for BII, there is risk of adverse selection, i.e. the Manager could be forced to invest in businesses that don’t meet its usual commercial rigour. This risk is being partially mitigated by selecting an experienced Manager with deep coverage across sectors in India. |
