Accelerating Africa’s energy transition

Thursday 3 November 2022 – 9:30am to 11:00am

About this event

This event bought together two renowned energy experts; Lord Adair Turner, Chair of the Energy Transitions Commission – a global coalition of energy leaders, committed to achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century; and Rose Mutiso, Research Director at the Energy for Growth Hub – a leading international research network focussed on building a high-energy future for all.

In this conversation we explored the action needed for the transition to net-zero and resilient energy systems, and discussed how Africa’s transition differs from other regions.

What does a just transition to net zero in Africa, i.e. one that is inclusive of workers and communities, mean in practice? What is the role of DFIs and impact investors in accelerating the transition? How can the transition support the achievement of the other sustainable development goals and are there any trade-offs?

Speakers included:

  • Lord Adair Turner, Chair, Energy Transitions Commission
  • Rose Mutiso, Research Director, Energy for Growth Hub
  • Nick O’Donohoe, Chief Executive, British International Investment
  • Chair: Amal-Lee Amin, Managing Director and Head of Climate Change, British International Investment
