IMPACT = Pioneering catalytic capital: a decade of learning

This event celebrated a decade of impact achieved by BII’s Catalyst Portfolio and explored the lessons BII has learnt along the way.

At British International Investment we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of tackling global development challenges by investing in high impact, though often risky, businesses. In 2014, we introduced a separate pool of capital – our ‘Catalyst Portfolio’ – with a mission to optimise impact by embracing a flexible approach to risk.

Since its launch ten years ago, the Catalyst Portfolio has allowed BII to provide financial support to a broader range of high-impact businesses and projects, delivering patient, flexible capital where it’s needed most.

As of the end of 2023 we had committed $1.6 billion to 91 businesses and funds through 120 transactions. The current portfolio supports over 108,000 jobs, has contributed to 324,000 MWh of renewable power production, and reached over 7.7 million farmers.

The conversation reflected on our journey, celebrated the impactful deals enabled by Catalyst, and shared the valuable lessons  set out in our new report Pioneering catalytic capital: a decade of learning.
